The graduate program at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College (CCS Bard) is an intensive course of study in the key texts, terms, and research methods for the study of modern and contemporary curating, from which students examine exhibitions and projects as sites of display, artistic production, aesthetic experience, and political action. Students develop research skills to critically asses both the critical and discursive functions of exhibitions, contemporary art, and legacies of curatorial practice. The program is broadly interdisciplinary and provides practical training and experience within a museum setting. Its international faculty includes curators and other museum professionals, scholars in the humanities and social sciences, artists, and critics.

The two-year curriculum is specifically designed to deepen students’ understanding of the intellectual and technical tasks of curating exhibitions and projects around contemporary art, particularly within the complex social and cultural situations of present-day arts institutions, as well as focusing intensively on interpretive and critical writing.
The program offers multiple opportunities for students to realize public curatorial projects and exhibitions in the CCS Bard Galleries, Hessel Museum of Art, and affiliated institutions, in addition to expanded contexts such as publications and discursive platforms.

The Center initiated its graduate program in curatorial studies in the fall of 1994. More than 100 curators, critics, scholars, artists, and other arts professionals have taught seminars or lectured in practicums and courses since the program began. The Center’s alumni/ae now include more than 200 figures working prominently in the field in the U.S. and abroad.

Resources include access to the Marieluise Hessel Collection, the extensive holdings of which are held in the Hessel Museum of Art at the Center for Curatorial Studies. Also on site are the CCS Bard Library and Archives, which contain over 25,000 books and periodicals including an extensive collection of exhibition catalogs and monographs on individual artists. The Archives contain institutional archives documenting the exhibition history of CCS Bard and the Hessel Museum, the organizational archives of select galleries and art spaces, the personal papers of prominent curators, and study collections which document significant international curators and a selection of historic exhibitions.
