Art Basel Conversations

Since its inception in 2002, the Art Basel Conversations program has staged discussions about current aspects of the international artworld featuring distinguished artists, art collectors, museum directors, curators, critics, gallerists, architects, and publishers.

This year's program starts off with the traditional Premiere 'Artist Talk', starring the highly acclaimed Los Angeles/New York artist Allen Ruppersberg in conversation with Whitney Biennial curator Jay Sanders. Ruppersberg has exhibited widely in the past decades, and he is exhibiting a major work at Art Unlimited.

The museums and institutions panel, 'How Will Museums Be Able to Collect?,' features Chris Dercon, Martin Roth and Nancy Spector, who have all worked, curated and directed institutions in both Europe and in the United States. On Friday morning, Dr. Farhad Farjam, Dana Farouki and Abdullah Al Turki discuss 'Patronage and Politics' in the Middle East. Saturday's 'The Future of Artistic Practice' series hosted by Hans Ulrich Obrist, focuses on 'The Artist as Urbanist', bringing together artists and architects Luc Deleu, Anri Sala, Stephen Willats and Momoyo Kaijima to discuss new models of urbanism. On Sunday, Julieta Aranda, Stefan Kalmár, Marta Kuzma and Anton Vidokle will explore the crucial role of alternative spaces in the art world in the discussion titled 'What is Alternative – Alternative to What?'

Art Basel Conversations takes place every morning at 10am in a newly designed auditorium in Hall 1. After each talk audience members have the chance to meet the panellists informally.
