Marignana/arte

Stefano Arienti/Copertine

A new venue for contemporary art is opening in Venice on Saturday May 25th, just a few days before the Biennale whirlwind sweeps over the city. Marignana/arte makes its debut with a one-man show of Stefano Arienti.

The exhibit presents some of his recent works that explore reflections and formal practices characteristic of his artistic research in the past few years. Copertine (Book Covers) is a collection of images that graphically display – reviving geometries and perceptive modes – the books of an ideal “library” in an installation consisting of 230 perforated sheets of paper. In the same way the perforations on vinyl records and the artist’s new experiments with terra cotta tiles, works poised between painting, drawing, sculpture, invite us to peek backstage and discover the secrets, the complexity, the vitality of simple objects and images that surround each of us every day.

Marignana/arte

The creation of a new space devoted to contemporary art in Venice is for many reasons something new and yet also a sign of continuity within a history long rooted in Venice and Dorsoduro. After the Second World War and the opening of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection this sestiere actually became the driving force in the “workshop of the contemporary”, producing the greatest expressions of the city’s artistic avant-gardes and dialoguing with the other Italian and international movements which led to significant consequences. Emilio Vedova, Armando Pizzinato, Tancredi Parmeggiani, Edmondo Bacci, Léon Gischia and Peggy Guggenheim herself are just a few of the leading actors of those days. The recent opening to the public of the spaces of Punta della Dogana and the Fondazione Vedova complete the identification of these places as an authentic “triangle” of contemporary arts facing the Biennale Giardini, thus opening a new chapter for the role of Venice in the arts of our time. The Marignana/arte gallery fits into this context with a program of exhibitions expressing the latest experiments and an “archive” documenting with books and graphic works what is going on in the international art circuit.
