The city council of S. JoГЈo da Madeira, Portugal, is pleased to present Discontinuous Line: Selections from the Norlinda and JosГ© Lima Collection, the inaugural exhibition of the Oliva Creative Factory. The Oliva Creative Factory is a new cultural and economic venue installed in the old Oliva factory quarter in S. JoГЈo da Madeira, an industrial town in northern Portugal. The Norlinda and JosГ© Lima Collection was initiated in the early 1980s by JosГ© Lima, a local businessman, and is currently on long-term loan to the city council of S. JoГЈo da Madeira. It is one of the most important private collections in Portugal.

Norlinda and JosГ© Lima Collection
The Norlinda and JosГ© Lima Collection includes approximately 1,000 works by more than 250 Portuguese and international artists. It encompasses a wide range of media, generations, styles, and subject matter. It maps Portuguese and international art trends since World War II, with an emphasis on Western Europe, South America, and Southern Africa. Many artists, especially Portuguese, Spanish, and French, are represented with numerous works. Movements such as Nouveau RГ©alisme and Figuration Libre, and groups such as KWY and El Paso, are areas of special focus.

Discontinuous Line is the first exhibition to present the Norlinda and JosГ© Lima Collection in its entirety. The exhibition’s organizing principle aims to create multiple narratives by pointing out constellations of images, objects, issues and questions based on different visual, theoretical, and historical connections. This suggests the participation of the visitor in the construction of his or her experience, on both an intellectual and an emotional level.

The exhibition includes international artists whose works are rarely seen in Portugal or who are little known or unknown in the country, as well as some established and young Portuguese artists. There are iconic artists from the West, both contemporary and from the 1950s onwards, as well as modern and emerging artists from the Global South.
